Celebrated during the Tamil month of Aippasi (mid-October to mid-November), Anna Abhishekam literally translates to the “abhishekam with rice,” where cooked rice is offered to Lord Shiva.

What is Anna Abhishekam?

In Hinduism, Annam is considered as an expression of gratitude for abundance. Offering cooked rice in large quantities signifies respect and thankfulness to Lord Shiva and celebrates his role as the supreme provider and sustainer of the universe. Bathing the Shivalinga with rice represents the soul’s journey toward nourishment and purification. Just as rice sustains physical life, it symbolizes the spiritual nourishment that Shiva provides for the soul.

In addition, Anna Abhishekam signifies the purification of the body and mind, reinforcing the importance of simplicity, humility, and detachment in spiritual life. Devotees pray for inner purification, peace, and spiritual growth, believing that Shiva’s grace will free them from material attachments.
